This Privacy Policy describes how the "AI Bilingual Reading Assistant" Chrome extension (the "Extension") handles information when you use it. The Extension is designed to help you read bilingual content by providing AI-powered translation, summarization, and related features.

By using the Extension, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2. Information We Process

The Extension processes the following types of information:

• Text you select for translation — When you select text on a webpage and click the translate button, that text is processed to provide a translation.
• Webpage content for translation — When you use the "Translate Page" feature, the text content of the main webpage area is processed.
• Webpage content for summarization — When you use the AI summary feature, the relevant webpage content is processed.
• Configuration data — Settings you choose on the Options page, including your preferred language pair and selected AI provider.
• API keys — Keys you provide for accessing third-party AI services.
• Usage records — Translation history (automatically saved), reading history (automatically recorded for pages you visit), and favorites (saved when you bookmark a page).
• Feedback — Content you submit through the feedback form.

The Extension does not collect:

• Personal identity information (name, email address, phone number, etc.)
• Account credentials or passwords
• Browsing history beyond what you explicitly save
• Location data
• Financial information

3. How Information Is Stored

The following data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage.local API:

• User settings and preferences
• API keys
• Translation history
• Reading history
• Favorites
• User feedback

This data remains on your device and is not transmitted to any server operated by the extension developer.

4. How Information Is Used

The information processed by the Extension is used solely to provide the features you explicitly request:

• Translation — To translate text you select or webpage content you request to translate.
• Summarization — To generate summaries of webpage content.
• History and favorites — To display your saved records and bookmarks.
• Feedback — To review and improve the Extension based on user input.

5. Third-Party AI Providers

The Extension supports the following third-party AI providers for translation and summarization:

• Tongyi Qianwen / DashScope (via dashscope.aliyuncs.com)
• DeepL (via api-free.deepl.com or api.deepl.com)

Each third-party provider has its own privacy policy and data processing practices. We encourage you to review their policies:

6. API Keys

API keys are required to use the third-party AI services. You provide these keys through the Options page. The keys are stored locally in your browser using Chrome Storage and are sent with each API request to the corresponding provider for authentication.

The extension developer does not have access to your API keys.

7. Translation and Summarization Data

When you use the translation or summarization features:

• Selected text is sent to the configured AI provider for processing.
• Webpage content (for "Translate Page" or "AI Summary") is sent to the configured AI provider.
• The Extension does not retain copies of the text sent to or received from AI providers beyond what is stored in your local history (translation records are automatically saved for your convenience).
• The Extension does not operate a developer-controlled server for processing or logging these requests.

8. Reading History, Favorites and Feedback

• Reading history and favorites are stored locally and are used only within the Extension for your convenience.
• Feedback you submit is stored locally. If you choose to share feedback, the content you provide is stored in your browser's local storage.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

Data stored locally by the Extension remains on your device until you choose to delete it. You can delete this data by:

• Using the Extension's Options page to clear history, favorites, or settings.
• Going to chrome://extensions → Extension details → "Clear storage".
• Uninstalling the Extension.

Data sent to third-party AI providers during translation or summarization is subject to the retention policies of those providers.

10. Data Security

The Extension takes the following measures to protect your data:

• All communication with third-party AI providers uses HTTPS encryption.
• API keys are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API.
• No data is transmitted to servers operated by the extension developer.
• No analytics, tracking, or advertising code is included in the Extension.

However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. The extension developer cannot guarantee absolute security of data stored on your device or transmitted to third-party services.

11. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of consent in your jurisdiction). The Extension does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. The "Effective Date" at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised. Changes to this policy will be reflected in the updated version made available with the Extension.
